Save Silva School
History
Silva Consolidated School opened its doors in 1916. For 30 years enrollment stood around 93, but class sizes dwindled and the school closed in 1970. Eight years later the Geographical Center Historical Society rescued the two-story school from obscurity by moving it from Silva to Rugby’s Prairie Village Museum.
The Challenge
As with several of the historic buildings relocated to the museum’s village square, the foundation prepared for Silva School was not as solid as it should have been. Now, 46 years later, major work is needed to save this showcase from ruin.
The Project
The Save Silva School Project has four phases: (1) Lift the building, create a new foundation, and lower it back into place. (2) Repair and re-shingle the roof. (3) Repair and repaint the siding. (4) Replace the windows.
